The about:berlin reopened in 2019 following a comprehensive renovation. The process began in 2017 with a restructuring of the building led by AO Architects Berlin. Working Islands was initially commissioned to design the lobby on the 5th floor. On 300 m², a multifunctional space was created that combines reception, lounge, and breakfast areas. A clear zoning was achieved through a thoughtful material selection, balancing visual orientation with aesthetic harmony.
After approval of the lobby design, the concept was extended to guest rooms and corridors to establish a cohesive overall experience. A rhythmic lighting concept in the corridors provides variety: while the lobby and rooms are designed with bright, airy atmospheres, the darker corridors serve as transitional zones. These contrasts enhance spatial perception and create a dynamic hotel experience.
A combination of carefully curated catalog furniture, custom-built elements, and specially developed dual-purpose solutions helped reduce costs without compromising the boutique character of the hotel.
